Pamekasan - A migrant worker couple hailing from Pemekasan, Madura, are facing a qisash (en eye for en eye) penalty in Saudi Arabia if they can't pay a sum of money in lieu of having their hands severed.
Relatives of Husin Taufik and Saba'tun, including Husin's brother Makbul, and their daughter, Maria Ulfa, are currently seeking the regional authorities' help to raise Rp250 million to pay the ransom demanded by the Saudi family from whom the couple had allegedly stolen some belongings.
On Wednesday , Makbul and Maria Ulfa came to the East Java governor's office in Surabaya to tell the couple's story and ask for help to raise the needed amount of money but Governor Soekarwo was not available as he was out of town.
Makbul told Antara about his brother and sister-in-law's plight in Saudi Arabia on his way from Surabaya back to his home in Plakpak village, Pemekasan, with Maria Ulfa (11).
The two had wanted to meet the governor to ask for the provincial government's help to raise Rp250 million to save Husin and his wife from the harsh physical penalty.
Makbul and Maria Ulfa came to East Java's provincial capital accompanied by the head of Palengaan Laok village, Moh Said.
"Tomorrow, Thursday, we will again go to Surabaya to meet the governor. Now, we have to go home because Ulfa is unwell," Makbul said.
Hasin Taufik and his wife Sab'atun who had been working in Saudi Arabia since 2001 were jailed in 2006 after being accused by their employer of having stolen gold ornaments and car tools from his house.
The couple were told they would be punished by having their hands severed but they could escape the physical punishment if they could pay Rp250 million as compensation.
"We want to ask for the government's assistance to pay the compensation money because we ourselves are utterly incapable of meeting this demand," Makbul said.
